You know how it is with marketing, and this interview is about making a difference. This is about making the difference that you get.
First thing to know if you’re marketing director, is that you are in a position to make a difference. You’re in a position to make a difference because you have a lot of control over the direction of a project. For example, if you have the control to set the direction of a project, you have the responsibility if you don’t.
A lot of people don’t know what’s going on, but you do. You have to make sure that the project is on track.
You have to make sure that the project is on track because without a track-record of success behind you, you’re going to be a very risky person. Marketing director, I have two rules for you.
1. Don’t let your team and customers down.
If you are not able to deliver on time, you are not able to deliver on the project. If you have a team of 100 people, you must be able to deliver what you have promised to every single customer.2. If you are not able to deliver the results you have promised to every single customer, you are not able to deliver the project.
I know, I know. This is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. I have to be able to walk into a meeting without a single employee asking me to take a shit. I also have to be able to tell the truth to a group of 100 people, without the slightest doubt in my mind. I have to be able to say, “I will do this until the end of the project.
We’re not really here to ask you questions about marketing. We’re here to ask you a few questions about yourselves. You seem to be well-prepared, so I figured I’d start with an interview.
I’m here to interview people who I think are ready to take the next step. The goal is to help you understand how marketing works so that you can do it better. To help us learn, I want you to start by giving us some self-awareness.
First, we need to get a better understanding of who you are.
